The first fiscal year for the U.S. Government started Jan. 1, 1789. Congress changed the beginning of the fiscal year from Jan. 1 to Jul. 1 in 1842, and finally from Jul. 1 to Oct. 1 in 1977 where it remains today.

In 2017, U.S. exports of goods and services to Brazil were $63.5 billion, up 17.8% from 2016, and imports from Brazil were $35.0 billion, up 8.2% from 2016. As a result, the trade surplus with Brazil increased to $28.5 billion. In 2017, exports to Brazil accounted for 2.7% of total U.S. exports, and imports from Brazil accounted for 1.2% of total U.S. imports. Exports were led by industrial supplies and materials, which accounted for 27.8% of U.S. exports to Brazil, and imports were led by industrial supplies and materials, which accounted for 42.5% of U.S. imports from Brazil. In 2017, U.S. exports of goods and services to China were $188.0 billion, up 10.0% from 2016, and imports from China were $523.7 billion, up 9.3% from 2016. As a result, the trade deficit with China increased to $335.7 billion.
