Federal judge dismisses Stormy Daniels' defamation lawsuit against President Donald Trump
A judge in the US New York court has rejected a defamation lawsuit brought by adult film star Stormy Daniels against President Donald Trump and ordered her to pay his legal fees.
The ruling is a blow for Daniels and her lawyer, Michael Avenatti, who has raised a national profile from his legal battles against the president and is contemplating a presidential bid in 2020.
Daniels, whose legal name is Stephanie Clifford, argued in the suit that the president defamed her by accusing her of fabricating the alleged crime, which would be illegal.
Daniels is separately suing Trump and his former personal attorney Michael Cohen over a 2016 nondisclosure agreement regarding her claims she had an affair with Trump.
Michael Avenatti, Daniels' attorney, filed an appeal to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals soon after the ruling.
