United States (US) International Trade in Goods and Services with Australia

In 2017, U.S. exports of goods and services to Australia were $46.7 billion, up 5.0% from 2016, and imports from Australia were $17.9 billion, up 6.2% from 2016. As a result, the trade surplus with Australia increased to $28.8 billion.

In 2017, exports to Australia accounted for 2.0% of total U.S. exports, and imports from Australia accounted for 0.6% of total U.S. imports. Exports were led by capital goods (excluding automotive), which accounted for 20.1% of U.S. exports to Australia, and imports were led by foods, feeds, and beverages, which accounted for 17.3% of U.S. imports from Australia.

In 2017, the U.S. direct investment position in Australia (outward) was $168.9 billion, no change from 2017. The direct investment position from Australia in the United States (inward) was $66.7 billion, no change from 2017.

In 2016, Australia-based majority-owned affiliates of U.S. Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) employed 304.60 thousand people, a decrease of 6.2% from 2015; sales were $140.1 billion, down 6.8%. U.S.-based majority-owned affiliates of Australian MNEs employed 93.7 thousand people in 2015, a decrease of 0.8% from the previous year; sales were $55.6 billion, down 1.6%.
