United States International Trade in Goods and Services with United Kingdom

In 2017, U.S. exports of goods and services to the United Kingdom (UK) were $126.2 billion, up 3.1% from 2016, and imports from the United Kingdom were $110.6 billion, up 3.1% from 2016. As a result, the trade surplus with the United Kingdom increased to $15.6 billion.

In 2017, exports to the United Kingdom accounted for 5.4% of total U.S. exports, and imports from the United Kingdom accounted for 3.8% of total U.S. imports. Exports were led by capital goods (excluding automotive), which accounted for 16.1% of U.S. exports to the United Kingdom, and imports were led by other business services, which accounted for 13.1% of U.S. imports from the United Kingdom.

In 2017, the U.S. direct investment position in the United Kingdom (outward) was $747.6 billion, an increase of 9.0% from 2016. The direct investment position from the United Kingdom in the United States (inward) was $540.9 billion, an increase of 1.1% from 2016.

In 2016, United Kingdom-based majority-owned affiliates of U.S. MNEs employed 1.47 million people, an increase of 5.0% from 2015; sales were $606.5 billion, down 2.7%. U.S.-based majority-owned affiliates of U.K. MNEs employed 1.14 million people in 2015, an increase of 2.6% from the previous year; sales were $514.1 billion, down 16.5%.
