United States International Trade in Goods and Services with China

In 2017, U.S. exports of goods and services to China were $188.0 billion, up 10.0% from 2016, and imports from China were $523.7 billion, up 9.3% from 2016. As a result, the trade deficit with China increased to $335.7 billion.

In 2017, exports to China accounted for 8.0% of total U.S. exports, and imports from China accounted for 18.0% of total U.S. imports. Exports were led by capital goods (excluding automotive), which accounted for 25.2% of U.S. exports to China, and imports were led by consumer goods (excluding food and automotive), which accounted for 45.0% of U.S. imports from China.

In 2017, the U.S. direct investment position in China (outward) was $107.6 billion, an increase of 10.6% from 2016. The direct investment position from China in the United States (inward) was $39.5 billion, a decrease of 2.3% from 2016.

In 2016, China-based majority-owned affiliates of U.S. Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) employed 1.75 million people, an increase of 2.1% from 2015; sales were $345.3 billion, down 3.4%. U.S.-based majority-owned affiliates of Chinese MNEs employed 43.8 thousand people in 2015, an increase of 5.8% from the previous year; sales were $22.1 billion, down 0.7%.
