The US-Saudi Arab Relationship Is Out of Control

The White House relationship with Riyadh is in danger over the mysterious disappearance of a Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and the situation is creating a crisis like situation.

US-Saudi has a relationship that stretches back almost a century, since the 1933 kickoff of oil exploration in the kingdom.

The two countries have maintained a baseline of economic and security cooperation that has kept ties between them strong.

The alleged killing of Khashoggi at the hands of Saudi operatives in Istanbul appears to be the last straw for many lawmakers, who have threatened a variety of punitive measures, including ending US arms sales to Saudi Arabia, cutting off support for the Yemen campaign and imposing sanctions.

Donald Trump characterized Khashoggi’s disappearance as “no good” and pledged to get to the bottom of it.

The US intelligence intercepts indicate Khashoggi’s disappearance involved the highest levels of the Saudi government.

A business conference scheduled for later this month in Riyadh is already getting hit by the furor over Khashoggi’s disappearance.

Bloomberg, CNN, CNBC, the Financial Times and The New York Times have all pulled out as sponsors of the Future Investment Initiative conference.
