United States (US) International Trade in Goods and Services with Canada

In 2017, U.S. exports of goods and services to Canada were $341.3 billion, up 6.1% from 2016, and imports from Canada were $338.5 billion, up 7.8% from 2016. As a result, the trade surplus with Canada decreased to $2.8 billion.

In 2017, exports to Canada accounted for 14.5% of total U.S. exports, and imports from Canada accounted for 11.7% of total U.S. imports. Exports were led by industrial supplies and materials, which accounted for 22.8% of U.S. exports to Canada, and imports were led by industrial supplies and materials, which accounted for 43.1% of U.S. imports from Canada.

In 2017, the U.S. direct investment position in Canada (outward) was $391.2 billion, an increase of 7.1% from 2016. The direct investment position from Canada in the United States (inward) was $453.1 billion, an increase of 19.0% from 2016.

In 2016, Canada-based majority-owned affiliates of U.S. Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) employed 1.20 million people, an increase of 3.9% from 2015; sales were $540.1 billion, down 4.0%. U.S.-based majority-owned affiliates of Canadian MNEs employed 636.1 thousand people in 2015, a decrease of 1.4% from the previous year; sales were $315.7 billion, down 0.9%.
