United States (US) International Trade in Goods and Services with Germany

In 2017, U.S. exports of goods and services to Germany were $86.6 billion, up 6.5% from 2016, and imports from Germany were $153.3 billion, up 3.3% from 2016. As a result, the trade deficit with Germany decreased to $66.7 billion.

In 2017, exports to Germany accounted for 3.7% of total U.S. exports, and imports from Germany accounted for 5.3% of total U.S. imports. Exports were led by capital goods (excluding automotive), which accounted for 27.3% of U.S. exports to Germany, and imports were led by capital goods (excluding automotive), which accounted for 27.6% of U.S. imports from Germany.

In 2017, the U.S. direct investment position in Germany (outward) was $136.1 billion, an increase of 1.8% from 2016. The direct investment position from Germany in the United States (inward) was $310.2 billion, an increase of 5.4% from 2016.

In 2016, Germany-based majority-owned affiliates of U.S. Multinational Enterprises MNEs) employed 701.30 thousand people, a decrease of 0.1% from 2015; sales were $341.3 billion, down 4.5%. U.S.-based majority-owned affiliates of German MNEs employed 673.9 thousand people in 2015, an increase of 3.1% from the previous year; sales were $465.0 billion, up 1.2%.
