Hurricane Michael makes landfall: Florida, US
Hurricane Michael, a dangerous Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph, is lashing the Florida Panhandle.
"This is the worst storm that our Florida Panhandle has seen in a century," Gov. Rick Scott said.
The hurricane strengthened rapidly over the Gulf of Mexico after hitting Central America and western Cuba earlier this week. Officials have issued mandatory or voluntary evacuation orders in at least 22 counties on the Florida Gulf Coast.
Michael crashed onto Florida's coast Wednesday with 155 mph winds -- strong enough to demolish houses.
Hurricane Andrew in 1992 inspired tougher standards in Florida. But many older houses aren't built to withstand a beast like Michael.
