MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME: HISTORICAL COMPARISONS

The U.S. median household income from the 2017 ACS was $60,336. This was the fifth consecutive year with an increase in the ACS estimate of median household income for the nation. The 2017 U.S. median household income was the highest since full implementation of the ACS in 2005. Median household income in 2017 was higher than 2005 median household income for 31 states and the District of Columbia. The 2017 median household income was lower than 2005 median household income for seven states and Puerto Rico. In 12 states, differences in median household income between 2005 and 2017 were not statistically significant.

For the first time, U.S. median household income was higher than the median household income in 2007, the year before the latest recession.6 Median household income in 2017 was higher than pre-recession median household income in 19 states and the District of Columbia. Median household income in 2017 was still lower than pre-recession median household income in 12 states and Puerto Rico. In 19 states, differences in median household income between 2007 and 2017 were not statistically significant.
